Equest Special Riders Inc.
Instruction for physically and mentally challenged horseback riders since 1982
We want to welcome and introduce our new instructor, Shirley Small. She has always loved horses from the time she was very young. She rode Western trail for many years, and has owned horses for several years while living in the Midwest. She learned of therapeutic horseback riding and in the early 2000’s investigated establishing a therapeutic riding center. But a full-time health care career along with the raising of three sons with her wonderful husband pretty much prevented her from doing anything more with this interest.
But with sons now grown she found Equest Special Riders last October. With the help of her mentor, our part time instructor Mindy Stanley, she began the pursuit to become a PATH instructor. For the next four months she took riding lessons for two to four hours a week to prepare for the riding test. She volunteered every Saturday at Buddy Up Horsemanship, or at Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center . On January 26th she a achieved this goal and obtained her PATH certification.
We are very proud of her accomplishment and effort that it took to acquire this goal. Shirley will continue to teach Thursday classes and will teach Saturday classes when they resume.
Welcome to our new instructor - Shirley Small
Just finished a weekend at the 39th Annual Key Classic horse show in Monroe. The Key Classic has benefited Equest Special Riders for the last twenty plus years. Our board works at the show for the Morgan Club of Washington State and the Northwest Saddlebred Association. Thanks go to Debbie Maroon, Sandra and Roy McClendon, Jolene Barabe, Andrea Tallman and Pat Bliss for spending their Mother's Day weekend organizing and handing out ribbons.
And a special thanks to the Morgan Club of Washington State and the Northwest Saddlebred Association for making Equest Special Riders the beneficiary of this show.
